My Experience With Flashlight Friends
My 5-year-old son recently went through a phase when he was terribly afraid of the dark. My husband and I dreaded bedtime–previously a relaxing, family time together–because we knew the tantrums we would have to endure in order to get Joe to go to sleep.
He used to sleep just fine, but after a terrible nightmare last summer, everything changed. I can’t blame him: if I dreamed that a giant eyeball was watching me from the ceiling over my bed, I wouldn’t enjoy time alone in the dark, either. No matter how many times we explained to him that monsters weren’t real, he remained inconsolable. Meanwhile, we were all losing sleep…and patience. Even our 8-year-old daughter was showing signs of regression. She was worried about her brother, but also starting to suspect that he might be onto something in terms of what scary things might be waiting for her in the dark.
Our Flashlight Friends could not have entered our lives at a better time. I am so grateful for my mother, who heard about this amazing product from a neighbor. She knew how much our family was struggling, and ordered one each for Joe and Posey. Well, actually, she ordered THREE for each of them: one set for our house, and a set each to keep at both grandparents’ homes. Now, whenever my kids spend the night with Mimi and Pop-Pop or Grams and Grampy, they have a bright and comforting touch of home.
My mother had the hardest time selecting which Flashlight Friends my kids would love best. She is usually fairly decisive, but the amazing selection of colors and designs offered at the manufacturer’s website temporarily immobilized her decision-making abilities. In the end, my little lady received Pink Unicorn, Purple Panda, and Green Turtle. Joe’s favorite color is green, and he is a huge fan of dragons, so Green Dragon was an initial obvious choice for him. His bedroom is ice hockey-themed, so Black Penguin fits right in. And of course, who wouldn’t love the sweet-faced Blue Puppy?
My kids fight a lot, but they never fight over their Flashlight Friends. In fact, these toys have brought them closer together as they love to make up all kinds of crazy, fun games with them. They can even signal each other in the dark when they share a room at my in-laws’ house.
Posey is at the age where sleepovers are getting to be a big deal. She is invited to an overnight excursion almost every weekend, and we feel better knowing that we are sending her off with Pink Unicorn to keep her company in case she misses us at night. Last week, one of her best friends got scared in the middle of the night because of a huge thunderstorm, and her father had to go pick her up at two o’clock in the morning! I can’t help but think that if she had a Purple Panda or Blue Puppy of her own, the unhappy situation might have been avoided.
Flashlight Friends have many fun and useful attributes, but the thing that may impress me most is their seemingly endless supply of battery power. I can’t believe how long the batteries have lasted in each of ours. It must be the auto-off feature, but we haven’t had to replace the batteries yet in any of them! And because of the safe LED light, they never heat up, remaining pleasant to the touch no matter how long the light is repeatedly activated.
My sister is expecting her first child, and a Flashlight Friend is the gift at the top of my list. She doesn’t know what she’s having yet, so I have my eye on the adorable and gender-neutral Green Turtle, which both of my kids love.
We had a power outage at our house last week. While my husband and I clumsily fumbled around in the dark with candles and flashlights, my kids were completely prepared–and totally unafraid–thanks to the comfort of their Flashlight Friends. And whether your child needs a little help soothing bedtime fears, or just might enjoy a new cuddly buddy, Flashlight Friend are an appealing alternative to night lights and plain old stuffies that just end up tossed aside in a pile of plush.
